The blockbuster musical Chicago will become the third longest-running Broadway show in history on December 20. The company will celebrate the milestone after the evening performance at the Ambassador Theatre, when the show will have played 6,681 performances. Chicago will surpass the original Broadway production of Les Misérables to claim its new title.
The current revival of Chicago opened on Broadway on November 14, 1996 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre before transferring to the Shubert, followed by its current home at the Ambassador Theatre. Now in its 17th year, the show has spawned 24 productions around the world and has been translated into 12 different languages. Chicago won six Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Leading Actress (Bebe Neuwirth), Best Leading Actor (James Naughton), Best Director of a Musical (Walter Bobbie) and Best Choreography (Ann Reinking). The 2002 film adaptation of the musical also won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Chicago currently stars Amy Spanger as Roxie Hart, Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus as Billy Flynn, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart, Carol Woods as Matron "Mama" Morton and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine. As previously reported, two-time Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber will return to the role of Billy Flynn beginning December 25.
